Oars At The Ready! – Woking & Sam Beare Hospices – Dragon Boat Race & Fun Day 2018

Woking & Sam Beare Weybridge Hospices

About The Dragon Boat Race

The hospice will be holding its own annual Dragon Boat Races and Fun Day from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 3 June at Goldsworth Park Lake in Goldsworth Park, Woking.

The day opens with a colourful ceremony performed by the Chinese Association of Woking, in which Chinese lions chase away the bad spirits that could jinx the competitors.

Then teams of 12 to 20 people (aged 12 and up) take to boats with beautifully carved and painted dragon heads to race across the lake throughout the day and whittle the teams down to the winners.

Great for anyone with a competitive streak! No experience is required and it is brilliant fun both on the water and on the banks with lots of fun activities and refreshments happening all day – including the highly popular Pimms tent.

The event is held in memory of Kris Cook, a hospice supporter who passed away while riding RideLondon in 2014.

If you are not feeling quite so energetic then there will be lots of other activities for you to enjoy on the lake side, including a bouncy castle, ice cream, BBQ, face painting, tombola, plant tent, games, stalls and much more!

You may even like to visit the Pimms tent and toast the rowers’ hard work from the banks of the lake or indulge in a well-deserved Pimms after rowing yourself.

More Info About The Event

Dragon Boating is a water sport which has its roots dating back 2000 years throughout southern China. Whilst ‘competition’ has taken place annually for more than 20 centuries, as part of religious ceremonies and folk customs, dragon boat racing has emerged in modern times as an international sport, beginning in Hong Kong in 1976.

Woking & Sam Beare Hospices’ Dragon Boat event will once again be held in memory of keen hospice supporter Kris Cook, who grew up close to the lake where he pursued his love of water sports.

Trident Honda are the Dragon Boat event sponsors as part of their commitment made in 2016 to be a major sponsor for the charity over three years, after 21 years’ ongoing support for our hospices. All funds raised from the event will support the charity’s new 20 ensuite-bedroom hospice in Goldsworth Park.

To find out more and to enter your team visit www.wsbhospices.co.uk. Registration is £25 per person. Boats and life jackets are supplied, you just need to bring your competitive spirit for a fun race day experience!

About Woking & Sam Beare Hospices

Woking & Sam Beare Hospices is a patient-centred charity that delivers specialist palliative care to adult patients of all ages who have life-limiting and terminal illnesses. We cover the North West Surrey region, providing free of charge holistic care and support services for patients, their families and carers. Each year we care for over 1,400 patients both in our hospice and in their own homes (where over 70% of our care is delivered), enabling patient choice and the best quality of life.

We care for adults of all ages with a wide range of life limiting conditions such as cancer, heart disease, Motor Neurone Disease (MND), chronic pulmonary conditions, Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). We help patients to manage their symptoms, which are often complex and why they require the expertise of our Clinical Nurse Specialists and specialist doctors.

Our services enable us to offer our patients holistic care, which means we offer practical, emotional, social and spiritual support as well as managing their medical needs. We offer day care services where patients receive assessments, treatments and therapies, as well as emotional and spiritual support. We also deliver counselling for our patients and their families, including child bereavement services and school support programmes.

We are a charity, and while we receive some government funding, around 75% of what we deliver is funded through our charity shops and fundraising activities. We could not do this without the generosity of all of our supporters, volunteers and the local community.
